Photo Manipulation

1) My picture is based around hip-hop/rap, as you can see more clearly by looking at my artwork. The landscape is set in the downtown corridor of Los Angles, near the neighborhood of Compton. In the foreground there is an old school Cadillac, a classic “pimp” car, getting shot at. In the background there are the opaque figures of some of the best rappers, in my opinion (Tupac, Nas, Ghostface Killah, Dr.Dre). All of these MC’s have had to live the hard and rough life, but have now made it to stardom. All these pictures relate to the commonality of the hard ridden life of the ghetto.

2) Two elements and principles of design I used where: shape and value, focal point and movement.

- Shape: Shape can be seen through out my whole picture in two types, geometric or organic. Geometric shapes are structured, and often symmetrical (Ex. Circle, Triangle, Square). While organic shapes are usually abstract and don’t have defined boundaries. All the shapes in my work are combined to create a composition with no negative space.

- Value: I use value in my design to clearly distinguish between the fore, middle and background. Each uses different color values to make between them to make a greater contrast. The darker and harsher colors are in the front, which recedes to lighter and brighter images.

- Focal Point: The emphasis of my photo is the buildings in the middle of my work, which divide the rappers in the background and the car in the foreground. The black and white building attract attention and catch the eye, because they are “obviously” a different color then the rest of the images and the picture plane. Also, since the black and white buildings are not actually a picture, but rather a brush pattern, they are easier to spot and notice.

- Movement: On my picture plane, I have used movement in 2 forms: literal and compositional. The car in the foreground exemplifies literal movement while compositional movement starts initially with the car, but then your eye is lead around the artwork to the background of the city, to the skies with the opaque rappers.

Response Questions

1. In my three posters, I have incorporated different page layouts and designs to create a focal point and sense balance on the picture planes. In my first poster, I placed three pictures of Joe Thornton, to create a triangle effect with his bodies that directs the viewers’ eyes around the picture plane. In my second poster, I used the Canadian flag to divide the picture plane into three different sections. In my third poster, I used a tile pattern to separate the picture plane into many segments, which are overlaid by a spiral filter.

2. In each of my posters I applied different techniques and applications to differ them from one another. In my first poster, I used a big background image, so I could overlay a few pictures on top of it. This would not clutter the picture plane, which allows the viewer to focus and observe each picture separately. I also used smaller text to not divert from the focal point. In my second poster, I used the Canadian flag to evoke senses of poise and balance. I used few images and added little text, so I wouldn’t take away from the simplicity and effectiveness of the photos that are placed scarcely along the picture plane. In my third poster, I used many images to create a sense of repeat pattern, and large text to contribute to the contrast of horizontal text against the vertical photos.

3. In each of my posters I used the elements and principles of design to create a harmonious equilibrium through out my work. In my first poster, I used overlapping images to create a deception of depth on the picture plane. This helps the viewer to understand which pictures are in the fore, middle or background. I also used the three pictures of Joe Thornton to create a formal equilibrium on the picture plane; one picture on the left, centre, and right. Additionally, there is a use of visual texture, seen as a 3D shutter pattern that flows across my poster. In my second poster, I used opaque images to create a focal point in my artwork. The Canadian flag, and the NHL logo overlap each other creating the stress in the centre of the picture plane. This emphasis determines the balance of my work, by having writing on the left side and an image on the right. In my third poster, I used spiral lines as a filter, over top of each image to give you a gist of movement. The spiral lines however which are curvy-linear, suggest feelings of infinity and eternity, and each lead you to the emphasis on each picture. In addition rhythm is also seen in the background, repetition has been used as a tiling affect of the Boston and San Jose logos.

4. The image I have selected to be the strongest is my first poster, with the three pictures of Joe Thornton at different opacities. The picture plane is very clearly seen and the viewers eye is not distract by any one picture. The viewers’ eye is brought around the whole image, to fully comprehend the theme and the poster. The images are very crisp, with sharp edges. The formatting has been very minimal, plus the photos are bright and not blurry. The images are also in perfect ratio and have not been stretched to fit onto the picture plane.

5. The image that I placed least successful is my third poster. I didn’t have enough time; to fully complete the concept I was going for, which was a tiling background with many photos on top. I was also needed to change the foreground, by adding a “picture in picture” to really highlight the focal point in my artwork. I could of added text as well, like a small quote, describing the theme of my image.

Bus Stop

The bus stop in this picture is just outside the fence at Crescent. Stud3nts collect here to grab the bus to go to other activities, to their homes and to the shopping centre at York Mills and Bayview. Typically the students who take the bus are older and no longer expect a parent to pick them up at the end of the day. It is another way to chat with other students as you wait at the stop for your specific bus or even share a seat and chat as you ride to your destination. The only thing I dislike about the bus is when it is delayed and the sharp winter winds cut through you like a knife. It is then I wish I was back in the lower school waiting for my mom to pick me up in a warm car

Water Main

SCHOOLS OUT! This is a picture of a broken water main on Bayview Avenue in front of Crescent School, the Granite Club and the Bob Rumble Centre on November 13, 2007. School was shut down for the entire day because there wouldn’t be any running water in the school. This meant there would not be water for the toilets, hand washing and the drinking fountains. This problem allowed us to get out of school for the day, which extended are 5-day weekend into a 6-day weekend. However the city was right on the breakage and fixed it within 8 hours, which meant we had school on Wednesday. The problem of the aging water mains in and around the school has been a re-occurring problem. Regardless of this none of the students are complaining.

Robots

Crescent School is very competitive in the realm of robotics. We have had many winning robotic teams over the years and we continue to strive for excellence. We have even competed with teams in the United States. This club has grown significantly in popularity since it began. Both of these robots are hand built by students and faculty. Each robot is designed to complete a specific task such as picking up a ball and shooting it into a basketball net.

Robotics club is an opportunity for students who are interested in electronics and computer design to work as a team to build a robot and then to challenge their skills by competing with other schools. I enjoyed my experiences in the robotics club in middle school

Head Master

Mr. Roberts is the Head Master at Crescent School and he is regarded as a strong role model and leader for the student population. In this picture it is around 8am in the morning and he is greeting the students as they arrive at school. He does frequently and this is a good way for Mr. Roberts to stay in close touch with the students. His spirited “Good Morning” is also great way to start the day.

He ensures our school runs in an orderly fashion with a focus on a quality education with extra curricular activities including sports and the arts. He also organizes fundraisers and charities to donate to needy people or countries. He has a very responsible job and I think it is really great that finds time in his morning to meet the students as they arrive.

Creative Learning Centre (CCL)

The Centre for Creative Learning also known as the CCL is a recent addition to our school. This building is one of the focal points for students and teachers to gather at our school. It houses a theatre, a studio, and classrooms. We use this facility for multiple purposes, such as music and drama productions, classes, assemblies and meetings.
The theatre holds about 300 – 350 people at one time and is at easy access to all teachers and teachers. We are lucky to have the CCL because it has state of the art audio and visual technology.

Field House

The Field House, is a huge facility that holds 3 full size courts that can be converted into a playing area for tennis, badminton, volleyball, soccer, floor hockey, or basketball. These courts are enclosed by a track, and on one end there is change rooms and on the other there is a workout room. Our school is the first to have this state of the art complex. The space is used for many periods of gym and other activities that we host at the school. This space is also rented out for many recreational sport leagues and functions.

Coat and Boot Drive

The coat and boot drive is an annual Crescent community event. It is important that people who cannot afford to purchase warm clothing have the opportunity to receive a clothing donation from Crescent families. Each year there are thousand of hardship cases where people struggle to survive our winters. It is only one of many charitable events that we participate in during our school year. This banner reminds both parents and students that the drive is on and to go through your closets for jackets and boots that no longer fit.

House Flags

Simcoe House is the best! The purple flag is the symbol of the house that I belong to and the other houses are shown in the other colours. Simcoe is second on the flag pole because we have the second most house points. These points are obtained throughout the year when there are house competitions. When you join Crescent you are automatically assigned a house and you stay with your house through your entire stay at Crescent School.

Halloween

The Halloween party is an event thrown for the Lower School; were you get dressed in your Halloween costume and come to school, were there are multiple fun activities to participate in. It is usually in one of the gyms, with such things do as, bobbing for apples, haunted house, a raffle, etc.

It allows for the kids to interact with there friends, and be free and for the parents to get together and sit down and chat. It is an amazing function that has continued for many years.

Soccer

This picture is of Crescent School’s under 16 soccer team and their opponent, Ridley College. Crescent has many other teams such as squash, tennis, volleyball, badminton, basketball, hockey, and skiing. Our school competes in the CISAA and has had many winning teams. Many people come out to support these teams on both school days or on weekends. These are our “Crescent brothers” representing our school and installing a Crescent pride in our team successes. Not only do the players work hard but the coaches dedicate a great deal of time in practice and in games. Give a cheer to the Crescent teams!

Blazer

My Crescent School jacket has always been an indicator of my growth. I began Crescent in grade 3 and I have progressively gone from the small to the larger sizes in the Coyote green jacket. I admit my jacket is a little supersized right now and it will probably last me right through to grade 12! I will always recall trying to find my jacket when we had to wear it for the Holiday concert or for Prize Day. There was the odd time it landed in the lost and found along with many other student jackets.

Tie

Simcoe House is clearly the best of all Crecent School houses! The familiar green and purple tie with its permanent knot has been a fixture on my bedroom door handle for many school years. I am proud to say it has only been replaced once however, I did find it at the end of the school year at the bottom of my locker. I am now the owner of two Simcoe house ties. The tie identifies which house you belong to and this house division is just one more way to organize the Crescent students into smaller groups for team events.

Assignment #4 - Sabotage

1. This picture I have chosen is an example of indexical and iconic photographs. There is a deeper meaning, if you look at all the pictures. There is a representation of war in the picture, as you can see from the foreground and background pictures. The world trade centre was a target of terrorism, and the bombs from the Iraqi war, which are iconic pictures. Uncle Sam, in the bottom left corner is designed to look like Hitler and is an iconic picture. The American flag is an indexical picture, which means freedom and peace. The globe in the top corner is a indexical image, which is showing the 6 continents and the whole world united as one, no war or fighting.

Assignment #3 - Line

I choose these series of pictures because I though I best represented line. The pictures of the windows gradually opening is from the perspective and saying “a window of opportunity”. There are two types of line in this photo, vertical and horizontal.

The vertical lines suggest feelings of loftiness and spirituality. The erect lines extend upwards beyond human reach, toward the sky.

The horizontal lines communicate a feeling of rest or repose. These lines are parallel to the earth and are at rest in relation to gravity.

Front Doors

This picture of the front door is the first impression of the school, after the front gates. It is warm; welcoming area were students and visitors can get into the school. It is the main entrance of the school, and when you enter here your brain starts to function and get ready for the day that awaits you.

Crescent Benches

These benches symbolize part of my daily routine at school. They represent a place for me to rest, to reflect on the school day, to contemplate the evening ahead, to meet my friends and to wait for my ride home.

The benches are often full of knapsacks and other students. Most of the time while I wait friends walk by and join me for a chat. Then it becomes a spot where we make plans for the weekend ahead or discuss our homework or assignments coming up. It has become an informal meeting place for the Crescent brothers. From time to time a teacher will walk by you and you then have a chance to exchange a few friendly words outside of the classroom. One thing about the benches there is always activity around them.

Assignment #2 - Matthew Bloom

Assignment #1 - Picture in a Picture

In this assignment, I had to follow many steps to learn how to use Adobe Photoshop, an interesting program, were you can manipulate pictures, we were learning the basics of the software.

We had to take one picture that we thought was meaningful and symbolic to use in the procedure. I choose this picture because I thought it was very powerful, and that is why I put the boarder around the child who is holding a gun.

We changed the image in many ways; we added layers, boarders, color, and etc. to change the image into the final product.
